Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera Visits GEIDCO for Talks with Chairman Xin Baoan

On September 5, H.E. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, visited the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO) and held talks with Xin Baoan, Chairman of GEIDCO and President of the China Electricity Council (CEC). The visit included a tour of the GEI exhibition hall. Both parties expressed a strong interest in deepening cooperation in areas such as clean energy development, power grid interconnection, and the energy transition, with the goal of accelerating socioeconomic development in Malawi. The meeting was also attended by H.E. Long Zhou, Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, and Liu Zehong, Executive Vice Chairman of GEIDCO.

Chairman Xin warmly welcomed President Chakwera and his delegation to GEIDCO. He emphasized that GEIDCO was established to advance President Xi Jinping’s Global Energy Interconnection (GEI) initiative, which aims to create a platform for mutually beneficial international energy cooperation. Malawi is rich in hydro, wind, and solar resources, providing significant potential for growth. By harnessing these clean energy resources, Malawi can meet the growing demand for electricity in industrial, agricultural, and domestic sectors, ultimately driving the country’s economic and social progress. GEIDCO, with its strong research capacity and expertise in the power sector, stands ready to offer support by sharing China’s advanced power technologies and experience to help Malawi accelerate its energy and power development.

President Chakwera praised GEIDCO’s global leadership in clean energy development, utilization, and the green transition, as well as its transformative impact on energy development. Malawi is committed to ensuring sustainable electricity access for all its citizens and looks forward to benefiting from GEIDCO’s expertise and China’s proven successes in these areas. The country is eager to deepen practical cooperation, particularly in upgrading and modernizing Malawi’s medium- and low-voltage power grids, building transmission infrastructure, expanding hydropower, and advancing electric vehicle adoption. This partnership will contribute to Malawi’s clean energy transition and the broader transformation of its energy system, positioning the country as a model for sustainable energy and power development in Africa. During the meeting, President Chakwera was also briefed on GEIDCO’s research into Malawi’s energy and power development.

Other attendants were Nancy Tembo (Minister of Foreign Affairs), Moses Kunkuyu (Minister of Information and Digitalisation), Jocab Hara (Minister of Transport and Public Works), Colleen Zamba (Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet), Prince Kapondamgaga (CEO of the Farmers Union of Malawi), Allan Chintedza (Ambassador to China), Kaferapanjira (Chief Advisor on Economic Affairs), and Mwayi Polepole (Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs) from Malawi.
